Cornelius^8
Van Wickler
(Cornelius^7,
Evert^6, Evert^5, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. abt
1824, L.I., NY
Married:
(first
marriage): Marian Wright (b. abt 1829, NY)
December 1848
(second
marriage): Mrs.
Harriet Eldert (b. abt
1840)
Children: (by marriage to Marian Wright)
1. Sarah^9 Van Wickler, b. abt 1850, NY
2. Susan^9 Van Wickler, b. abt 1853, NY
3. Mary^9 E.
Van Wickler, b. abt 1860,
NY
4. Josephine^9
Van Wickler, b. abt. 1867, NY
1850
US Census for Hempstead, Queens, NY shows a Cornelius Van Wicklen,
age 26, laborer and wife Mary A. Van Wicklen, age 21
in the household of Joseph and Catherine Hendrickson (both age 65). Also in
this household is a black female, age 15, named Sarah Smith.
Nearby (adjacent on census form) are John and Emily Hendrickson (ages 30 and 35
respectively). Adjacent to John and Emily are the family of Foster and Mary Van
Wicklen (ages 35 and 33 respectively). This adds
weight to a hypthesis that Foster and Cornelius are
brothers and that this Cornelius and Mary A. are one in the same with the
Cornelius and Marian (Wright) Van Wickler on this
page. What is of special interest is that there is a Sarah Smith--a black
female--in the household with Cornelius and Mary A. Van Wickler.
Cornelius' father Cornelius marries second to a Sarah Jane Smith, but
apparently it is entirely coincidental in that Sarah Smith (black female) was
b. abt 1835 and Cornelius' second wife, Sarah Jane
Smith, is b. abt 1825 and is listed as white in the
1870 census.
1870
US Census for Hempstead, Queens, NY lists a Cornelius Van Wickler,
46, b. NY, farmer and no wife (presumably Mary dies by 1870, possibly giving
birth to Josephine?) with children: Sarah, 20, housekeeper, Susan, 17, Mary E.,
9, and Josephine, 3.
1880
US Census for Valley Stream, Queens, NY shows Cornelius Van Wickler
with wife (former Mrs. Harriett Eldert) and three
stepdaughters and one step grandson -- Elizabeth Eldert,
19 (b. abt 1860m NY), Ella Eldert,
17 (b. abt 1863, NY), Sarah Eldert,
15 (b. abt 1865, NY) and Lewis C. Eldert,
4 (b. abt 1876, NY). None of Cornelius children above
are listed in this household. Sarah, Susan and Mary E. would be 30, 27, and 20
respectively and would likely have been married or out of the household by this
time. But where is Josephine would would be 13 in
1880? Perhaps she died in childhood or was living with in the household of one
of her sisters.
Parents:
Cornelius' parents are Cornelius and Ann Nancy (Foster)
Van Wickle.
Marian's parents are: Mr. and
Mrs. Wright
